OneDayOnly, founded in 2009, saw an opportunity in the South African market to offer goods for sale via an online platform at huge discounted prices for a limited period of 24 hours – for “one day only”. In 2020, we were briefed to build OneDayOnly’s mobile app in close cooperation with the company’s own team of backend developers using the existing backend Application Programming Interface (API).

The Situation

OneDayOnly, founded in 2009, saw an opportunity in the South African market to offer goods for sale via an online platform at huge discounted prices for a limited period of 24 hours – for “one day only”. Over the past 12 years, the company grew to over 200 staff with headquarters in Cape Town. They still offer their customers a brand-new batch of deals every 24 hours, from gadgets to groceries, at prices below retail value.

With the addition of the OneDayOnly app, they now also provide customers with access to exclusive app-only deals and competitions. Customers can make use of the wish list to earmark their favourite deals for later and search for their favourite categories using the all-new categorisation functionality.

The Objectives

In 2020, we were briefed to build OneDayOnly’s mobile app in close cooperation with their own team of backend developers using the existing backend Application Programming Interface (API). This project’s goals were to:

Have a prototype of the app on the table as soon as possible.

Simulate user experience with the prototype.

Validate the app with their customers.

Go live in time for Black Friday – the biggest South African shopping day of the year!

The Solution

We worked with OneDayOnly’s design agency to:
1. Identify the app requirements.
2. Group these requirements into delivery milestones.
3. Create a robust product roadmap to follow.

Based on this roadmap, Polymorph started building the app. The skills and necessary development technology tools were further identified, keeping in mind that iOS and Android mobile platforms make use of different development technology stacks. In order to be ready for the Black Friday deadline, the team decided to use the React Native platform that could be deployed to both iOS and Android platforms instead of building on and maintaining separate code bases.

React was the best choice here because we knew that OneDayOnly had an experienced internal team with Javascript skills who would be able to take over and maintain the code base after the project was completed and handed over. We also gave substantial input on the design side of the app, such as how the information should be displayed and presented by, for example, adding animation to ensure a seamless and effortless user experience.

The Results

OneDayOnly was able to deliver an innovative mobile solution for iOS and Android devices. Since partnering with us to develop their new mobile app, these deals can now be accessed through both their mobile app and website.

The numbers speak for themselves: Data collected one year after the launch of the app in October 2020 shows that the impact on the client’s business included:

Increased business momentum, with the mobile app attracting 2,800 new users daily.

Overall growth of 515,438 installs since launching the app.

A scalable solution capable of handling increased server loads across various mobile networks.

Going Forward

Software development is an ongoing process and Polymorph will continue to provide assistance and add additional functionality as required.
