How Using LLMs Made Me a Better Communicator

Over the past two years, I’ve integrated large language models (LLMs) into my daily workflow, exploring their capabilities and gently testing the limits of how they can assist with whatever I’m busy with.

Initially, I expected they would streamline writing by summarising complex topics and structuring ideas. And, yes, they’ve excelled at that. Studies show that LLM-powered communication coaching shows measurable in users’ communication, clarity and empathy. But it was still a surprise to me when I was consistently using LLMs: much like study results show, I too have become a better communicator.

With clients, with colleagues, with friends.

And no, this isn’t a post about AI taking over the world or replacing jobs. Instead, it’s a reflection on an intriguing personal revelation: interacting with AI has directly improved my communication with other humans.

The Clarity Imperative

When interacting with an LLM, clarity is essential. To elicit meaningful responses, I’ve learned that prompts must be:

  1. Clear

    1. Avoid ambiguity and ensure your intent is immediately understandable.

  2. Specific

    1. Include precise details to prevent misinterpretation.

  3. Structured

    1. Organise your thoughts systematically rather than randomly scattering ideas.

If a prompt falls short in any of these areas (if it’s vague, overly complex, or poorly articulated), the LLM’s response quickly reflects these shortcomings. This instant feedback loop has become an invaluable training ground for sharpening my clarity and intentionality.

Better Conversations Everywhere

What’s fascinating is that these habits didn’t just stay confined to my interactions with AI; they naturally seeped into all my other communications. I’ve noticed significant improvements:

  • I’m getting to the point quicker, respecting my audience’s time and attention.
  • I’m providing upfront context at the beginning of conversations, which means I’m misunderstood far less often.
  • I’m breaking complex thoughts into structured points, which makes me easier to follow in meetings or presentations.

These little adjustments have notably improved my interactions across the board, as well as helping me have more empathic conversations.

Embracing Feedback

The crux of this realisation isn’t just AI’s weird effect on my “human” abilities.

The real lesson is understanding the value of immediate, honest feedback and developing the habit of actively seeking and recognising it.

Here’s how you can apply this principle effectively in your everyday interactions:

Ask proactively.

Regularly check-in with your audience.

“Was my explanation clear? Did that point make sense to you?”

Observe carefully.

Non-verbal cues like confused expressions, hesitation, or follow-up questions often indicate that your message didn’t land as intended.

Write things down.

Often, simply articulating your thoughts on paper can illuminate gaps or complexities you hadn’t noticed before (just like when you write and rewrite prompts for ChatGPT).

Use supportive tools.

Beyond LLMs, other reflective practices like retrospectives, journaling, peer reviews, or public sharing can significantly amplify your clarity.

AI and LLMs for Personal Growth

The explosive growth and adoption of AI technologies like LLMs are exciting. But beyond the hype, there’s a deeper lesson about human communication and personal growth: embracing rapid feedback can improve how we express our ideas and understand each other.

As our workspaces and personal lives are increasingly influenced by AI, let’s remember that some of its most tangible impacts may be unexpected – good, bad, or otherwise – and being aware of how AI changes you is your responsibility.
