As an avid gamer, game designer and illustrator, The Cape Town International Animation Festival is one of the annual highlights in my conference calendar.
Cape Town International Animation Festival is the only dedicated African Animation Festival on the continent, with a programme that has something for everyone. Delegates can enjoy films, workshops, dedicated networking sessions and an exhibition area. They search the globe to bring their visitors the best of the animation industry and each year, I am excited to see what will be shown and who the speaker’s are.
I spoke at last year’s CTIAF alongside Gerrit Kruger from Sozo Labs on VR, games and apps – Animation as the language of interaction. The talk was well received and I enjoyed the engagement around it after the talk as well as at the stand showcasing the Halolens. This year we decided to become more involved, but it was only after attending VRDays in Amsterdam last year, that we knew how.
We were blown away by the great work done and how animators are contributing to the AR VR XR space. Having spent a few hours in the VRDays VR Cinema, Chantal Louw and I discussed ways to bring the same concept to Cape Town. We felt that the best platform was one that celebrated the work on animators and was open to the public, thus CTIAFwhich is why, this year Sozo Labs has come onboard as the sponsor of the first free VR Cinema in South Africa.
As part of the conference, I will be one of three on a panel discussion with Jean Mortlock from Lung and Rick Trewek from Alt Reality titled ‘Preparing for Virtual and Augmented Realities: The Possibilities are Endless’. We will be discussing the barriers to entering the market as a user to the role of the illustrator, as well as the business success of VR globally.
Over the last six years, CTIAF has become the place to see local and international speakers and this year is no different. The great line-up includes Shuzo Shiota CEO of the oldest animation company in the world, to Lorna Withington Director of Creative Affairs at Entertainment One and the incredible artist Rob Valley.
